Store Hours: Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 11-5
Here are some items you can find in our booth space at Valley Antiques & Uniques.
I have been busy blogging just not on this site ( www.thevintageattic.blogspot.com ). So I made some changes to the website on my own ( now I have to call datachive for help Oooops) I have to say after the store closed it was hard for me to keep up with a website that reminded me of the old store. So I’m hoping I can get some new picture’s on here and take out the old one’s, I’m ready to make a fresh start.
I took a couple months off, but I have to say it’s in my blood, I don’t think I can stay out of this business forever.
So I rented a space at Valley Antiques & Uniques the first of March 2010, and It’s going great. The shop has a great group of girls that work there, every time you walk in they are so friendly and help full. You must stop over and check it out! See if you can guess which booth is The Vintage Attic’s space. Oh yea I’m looking to expand my space soon, so they may be more than one space.

HAGERSTOWN — Tanner Sayler sells nostalgia and adults are eating it up.
The Hagerstown entrepreneur is the owner of a retro candy business, which features sweets from the past 40 years.
Remember Pop Rocks, Whistle Pops, Teaberry Gum and Spree?
Thanks to Tanner, grown-ups can revisit their childhood and be kids in a candy shop once again.
But this isn’t some baby boomer reliving the past.
This businessman is 11 years old.
A sixth-grader at Northern Middle School, Tanner began selling candy about five years ago, when his parents, Jim and Melissa Sayler, owned a home decor shop in Waynesboro, Pa., called The Vintage Attic.
He started out with one jar on the counter, stocking it with candy purchased with his allowance.
When the business closed last year, his mother began selling some of her products at By Grace, a store near the square in downtown Hagerstown that features handmade furniture and crafts.
“We didn’t want to discourage Tanner’s ambitions,” Melissa Sayler said. “So I invited him to share space with me in my corner of the shop.”
But this time around, instead of candy that could be found on any store shelf, Tanner decided to go retro.
“We did some research, got a wholesale book and began buying candy that adults would remember from their childhood,” Melissa Sayler said.
Tanner said he was unfamiliar with the names of most of the candy, but had a helping hand in making selections from his parents.
But he does admit to taste-testing the products before selling them to the public.
Among his favorites, he said, are Wax Bottles, while his mother likes the marshmallow ice cream cones.
His best sellers are Sugar Daddies on a stick and Cowtails.
Tanner said business has been very good with a lot of repeat customers.
“I would love to see him have his own space some day,” store manager Randy Samu said.
Samu said the candy brings a smile to the faces of many customers who recognize the treats from days gone by — including a woman in her 80s whose eyes lighted up at the sight of Sugar Daddies on a stick.
“When she was young, she was courted by a boy who took her to the movies,” Samu said. “He always came with Sugar Daddies because they would last the whole movie and they wouldn’t have to buy candy at the theater. She said the candy really brought back memories.”
Tanner said he puts aside 10 percent of his profits for tithing to his church and the rest goes into a savings account.
By the time he is 18 years old, he hopes to have enough money for a down payment on a Ford Mustang.
“At this rate, he should have a nice sum of money,” Melissa Sayler said. “I think he’ll have a real sense of accomplishment.”
Tanner said many of his classmates aren’t aware that he has his own business, except for those who were in his elementary school last year.
“I brought in candy for everyone in my class,” he said. “The kids and my teacher thought it was pretty cool.”
While he has developed a knack for business, Tanner said he hopes to go to college to become a veterinarian.
“He always has loved animals,” Melissa Sayler said. “We’d have a zoo at home if we let him.”
Tanner said his candy ranges in price from 25 cents to $1.50. Customers can make selections from about 24 different varieties, including Boston Baked Beans, Mountain Taffy, candy necklaces, extra large Smarties, Nik L Nip, Gold Mine bubble gum, Lemonhead, Sixlets and chewable mustaches.
“It’s fun,” Tanner said of his business venture. “I like seeing what sells the most each week and I like stocking the shelves.”
But he especially loves when the boxes of candy are shipped to his door.
“That’s when I get to sample everything,” he said.
May peace break into your home and may thieves come to steal your debts. May the pockets of your jeans become a magnet for $100 bills. May love stick to your face like Vaseline and may laughter assault your lips! May happiness slap you across the face and may your tears be that of joy May the problems you had, forget your home address! In simple words . May 2010 be the best year of your life!!!
Happy New Year!!

This past Saturday after leaving Tanners soccer game, we stopped at a yard sale. I couldn’t resist. The lady that was having the sale said you look so familiar and I was thinking the same thing about her, come to find out she was a former customer of The Vintage Attic.
She was selling this small side board, I over looked the veneer top that was buckling and the attempt to paint this piece. I left the yard sale without buying this sideboard, but it didn’t take me long to turn the car aroud go back to pick it up.
Bonnie you will be glad to know this is what it looks like now. Your old sideboard has a new and beautiful life, It is headed to a shop in Luckett VA. there someone will fall in love with it and, ad it to their memories.
Some yard sale finds I picked up this weekend, the fan and Avon tin was from the same sale as the sideboard. The metal crowns and wire dress form is from a shop down town Hagerstown ( I can’t remember the name of it) The shop is beside of the Maryland Theater.
A hugh trailer load of furniture headed to Lucketts VA..
I will be posting pieces of furniture from time to time for sale, so check back.
God Bless,
Melissa
Recently I finished a project that I have been working on at my home.
It never fails, every time I get started on a project I think to myself I need to take a before photo. I never do. I always end up getting the photo after I get started, but this will give you an idea of the paint color that was in my bedroom. So 1980s with that dreadful painted wall boarder in pink blue and green, to think that was in my room and I painted it that way years ago makes me cringe. Oh yea and those little mini blinds, you know the ones you could get from Wal-Mart for 6-8 dollars they are going to go.
Jim ripped up old pink carpet from my closet, that we never took out. I think in this photo he was putting down the quarter round wood trim.
we had to take off the door to get a big old ugly chair out of the room that won’t be returning.
My oak furniture that I want to be white, will stay oak. As most of you know when your married there is alot of compromising going on, so the furniture stays oak and the big old ugly chair goes.. Oh yea there was a 5′ by 7′ green rug at the foot of my bed that was taken out and will not return either.
Now for My new retreat..
Love my new light, this was once brass and now its beautiful, shabby & white..
Sitting in this chair in the morning or anytime I want to get away and read is so comfortable.
My new plantation wood blinds with out strings, and the cotton sheer white curtains pull it altogether.
After it was all done when I stood back and looked at it, I like the furniture just the way it is, in it’s natural state of oak. I love the the quite simpleness of the ligth blue color, the name of the color was called quiet moment and now that the room is finished I can see why.
We took a good van load of stuff out of this room that went to auction, and will not return in any form. I really love the simplicity of this room. It has inspired me to start another room in my house, my spareroom that will be made into my office/scrapbook room. I’ll post that later, I’m in the process of taping it up to get painted.
Stay tuned to see what happens around here next. Oh yea, I also have a blog on- www.thevintageattic.blogspot.com so stop by and check it out!!
God Bless, Melissa
I’ll Never Forget the day Americans came together as one. There were no republicans or democrats, there were no religious different’s, there was no ethnic race prejudice, there was only one Nation Under God. I’ll Never Forget the day All Americans stood together to help our fellow man. I’ll Never Forget the silence for days in America as we were waiting to hear from God!
I’ll Never Forget 9/11
